SET NINE GOTHIC REVIVAL SIDE CHAIRS, NEW YORK CITY, ATTRIBUTED TO J. AND J.W. MEEKS, Mid 19th century. Each crest pierced with trefoils above pointed arch tracery; over-upholstered seats raised on saber legs - 34 in. x 17 1/2 in. x 17 in.

PROVENANCE:

A set of four chairs with identical elements by J. and J.M. Meeks is part of the White House Collection, commissioned by the Polk Administration 1846-7 and used in the Cabinet Room during the Lincoln Presidency, and is illustrated Magazine Antiques, July 1966 "More on the Meeks cabinetmakers," fig. 7, p. 73.


Surface abrasions; old patches; age cracks; upholstery as-is condition; prior restorations to legs and feet; one chair with veneer losses to front seat rail and others with minor losses
