RUSSIAN ICON OF MOTHER OF GOD, partial maker's mark, 1892, Moscow, 84 silver standard. Tempera and gesso on wood panel. With a repoussé and enamelled silver oklad - 11 1/2 in. x 9 3/4 in.

PROVENANCE: Admiral John J. Lynch, Naval Attaché at the American Embassy in Moscow, 1950s

Board with age cracks and back has been re-stabilized. The icon image is fully painted under oklad. There is recent flaking allover but is most noticeable on the borders. There is lifting surrounding the central image. The enamelling is excellent with next to no losses. Surface craquelure. The underside of the oklad has been padded to protect the painted surface of the icon.
