JAPANESE KAIAWASE GAME. Edo/Meiji period. Thirty color and ink on paper applied on clam shells depicting various designs and of various sizes, gilt highlights.
This game was played by nobles in the Heian period (794-1167); matching the shell and its lid was said to represent wago (harmony). - Largest: 3 5/8 in. wide.
