NOTE: The Grand Army of the Republic was the national organization of Civil War vets. This walking stick was owned by the Le Frame family of Washington County, MD, or the Nesbitt family of Clearspring, MD. Handle encloses metal piece that rattles when shaken. Folklore maintains that is that a veteran would have a piece of shrapnel placed in the handle from a battle or his own wound. After the war, numerous GAR reunions took place; this walking stick is from one of the reunions.
