Edward Thornton Tayloe, son of Colonel John Tayloe III, was born in 1803 in Washington, DC's landmark Octagon House, the New York Avenue mansion designed by Dr. William Thornton, architect of the United States Capitol. He wed Mary Ogle on December 16, 1830 and, after pursuing a career in diplomatic service, spent the remainder of his life as a plantation owner in Virginia.
