JASPER FRANCIS CROPSEY (American, 1823-1900). CABIN AT GREENWOOD LAKE, signed and dated 1863 lower right. Oil on canvas - Framed, 10 1/2 in. x 18 in. Estimate $30,000-50,000
According to Kenneth Maddox, Ph.D., of the Newington-Cropsey Foundation, "After a seven-year stay in London, England, Cropsey arrived in the harbor of New York on 4 July 1863, one day after the Battle of Gettysburg. That summer he journeyed to Greenwood Lake and painted two almost identical views of his father-in-law's home situated on the southwest corner of the lake. [...] It was undoubtedly at this time that the artist [also] painted A Cabin at Greenwood Lake which shows a cabin situated on the eastern shore of the lake. The artist frequently included the log structure--or one similar to it--in his views of Greenwood Lake. Occasionally, in these compositions he would also add a female figure not unlike the one in this painting. Cropsey throughout his career painted over 150 compositions of Greenwood Lake. In 1891 Cropsey exhibited A Cabin at Greenwood Lake in 1863 at the Autumn exhibition of the National Academy of Design which was probably a replica of this painting."
