Very old handwritten label on verso states: "This is a well painted portrait of Charles, 2nd Duke of Richmond and (illegible, perhaps, abbreviation for "Lennox"). He died in 1750 at the age of 49. He was painted by Van Loo and engraved by J. Faber. He was great, great grand Father of (illegible, abbreviation-possibly for "Constance"), Lady Russell. We have the engraving in my collection of Mezzotints in the Prints Room. (Signed) C. Russell."
In period gold frame.


Relined; excellent condition, ultraviolet inspection indicates no inpainting
