PLAINS INDIAN BULL HORN RATTLE,19th-20th century, possibly Lakota, Sioux. The center of the horn, being affixed by wide leather strips encircling the horn and attached to wooden handle and other leather sinews wrapped and encircling the wooden handle to the body of the horn, secured by brass tacks. The end of the horn, through which the rattling materials/beads or pebbles (?) were inserted, has a round leather cover, sewn to horn by leather sinews. A shock of horse hair is affixed near the top of wooden handle, but below the wrapped and encircling leather sinews, by red banding. Middle of handle is covered with blue, red, and green seed beadwork in bands, encircling the handle with various size bands, with brass tacks affixing the first and last lines of beading to the handle. Immediately below is a tapered, cylindrical object (possibly a bell), which is affixed by leather sinews decorated with other colored larger beads, at least, one of which, is pinkish red. Lower third of handle is wrapped by leather straps held in place with brass tacks and a piece of bone is affixed by leather sinews to very bottom of handle - 24 in. x. 13 in. Estimate $500-700
