PLAINS INDIAN TURTLE SHELL RATTLE,19th-20th century, possibly Lakota, Sioux. Turtle shell encased on the outsides with apparently an almost translucent leather shield, affixed by stitched leather. White horse hair affixed by leather sinew and red banding to top of shell. At top of handle, the shell is affixed with wide leather sinews encircling the curved bone, handle, one white and one black, and a shock of horsehair, affixed by red banded leather sinews to handle. Middle of handle decorated with circular bands of varying widths of red, white and light blue seed bead work, at bottom of which, they are affixed by leather sinews, to which are appended two pierced bone or stone (?) circular objects with red and blue larger beads of varying sizes and shapes affixed thereto - 15 3/8 in. long.
