Originally designed to be the residence for President George Washington, who did not occupy it on account of the government moving to Philadelphia. This edifice was erected at the foot of Broadway, facing Bowling Green. It served as the NY Governors' house for Governors Clinton and Jay. From 1799 it served as the U.S. Custom House, until it was demolished in 1813.
