ENGLISH GEORGE III-STYLE SILVER ARMORIALLY-DECORATED PITCHER,with spurious hallmarks. Pyriform, on circular foot; with foliate capped scrolling handle and spout; one side with chased armorial and banner inscribed "Ferro Non Gladio, Canford Manor" - 39 oz., 6 dwt.; 8 3/4 in. high. Estimate $500-700
In overall good condition - there are two tiny dents with scratches near the bottom of the body. There is a larger scratch near the handle. There are inventory numbers scratched into the surface under the foot. The scratches on the body, although not very deep, are detectable to the touch. Also later stamped "England" on the underside of the foot rim.
"A Genealogical and Heraldic Dictionary of the Peerage and Baronetage", volume 42, part 1, reveals the creation of the arms in 1838 thus suggesting that the armorial crest on the pitcher was added at a later date.
