JOHN HENRY TWACHTMAN (American, 1855-1902). SNOW SCENE NEAR GREENWICH, CONNECTICUT, FAIRFIELD, COUNTY, signed faintly lower right. Oil on canvas - Framed: 24 in. x 30 in. Estimate $70,000-90,000
PROVENANCE: Rinehart Family, New York, NY
NOTE: John Henry Twatchman in his final years spent much time painting at his sprawling 17 acre estate in Greenwich, Connecticut, near the home of his close friend, painter, J. Alden Weir. This impressionist work is likely a winter view alongside nearby Round Hill Road, which can be seen at lower right. Barren trees and a lone pine dot a calm white landscape under a cloud filled sky with vestiges of blue. A rocky outcropping appears to peek through a mound of snow near upper left. Round Hill Road was the location where Twachtman found inspiration for many of his winter landscape scenes showcasing snow, ice and atmosphere. The effects of light, mist and the careful use of color throughout successfully emanate feelings of serenity and solitude making this work an excellent example of the signature style Twachtman is known for.
