ART NOUVEAU EDMOND LACHENAL GLAZED EARTHENWARE VASE, Edmond Lachenal (French, 1855-1948), Inscribed to base Decauur, Glaze signature Lachenal Ceramic 3075. Balluster form vase having pierced foliate embellished neck; having matte glaze in mottled shades of burgundy and cream.

'Edmond Lachenal was one of the pivotal figures in the development and creation of Art Nouveau in ceramics, and his works are comparable in influence and importance to those of Ernest Chaplet, Adrien-Pierre Dalpayrat, and Albert Dammouse. His work is included in collections of Art Nouveau ceramics in the Louvre, Paris and The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

By the late 19th Century, matte glazes, like the emphasis on stoneware, were becoming a distinguishing characteristic of French artistic ceramics. But Lachenal's work stood apart because of his use of bright polychrome effects–greens, violet, rose, and yellow. Also, whereas the matte glazes of the other French ceramists were obtained by carefully calculated combinations of minerals and were achieved in the firing, Lachenal's were achieved by using a bath of hydrofluoric acid to cut away the glaze's glossy outer layer. Lachenal's work after 1900 shifted into a high Art Nouveau style.' - 22 1/2" high.
