19TH CENTURY TINTED LITHOGRAPH, THE PRINCIPAL BREEDS OF HORSES IN USE IN NORTH AMERICA, AFTER AUGUSTUS KOLLNER, Augustus Kollner (German, 1806-1912). Published Philadelphia, 1872. Matted, of the period tinted lithograph depicting various horse breeds, including the American Trotter, the Arabian, the English Draught Horse, the Morgan, the Racehorse, and the Horse of Normandy. Measuring 24" high x 18 3/4" wide. (#49642.1)

'An exceptionally fine draughtsman, Kollner became especially known for his watercolors and lithographs of horses and racing, as well as his American city views. As a sole proprietor of his own publishing house, he produced labels, advertisements, maps, and city and landscape views. He remained in the trade through the 1870's, including the lithography of a plan for a Philadelphia post office and court house, one of a series of about fifty portfolios of architectural plans issued from 1855-1861 by the Construction Branch of the Treasury. In the 1870's, Kollner also produced his last major series of landscape lithographs and issued "Bits of Nature," in 1878, which focused on unusual landscapes in Fairmount Park in addition to a similar set depicting Maryland, Pennsylvania, Canada and Virginia. After this period, Kollner focused on his watercolors and oil painting, many of which show Bucks County and Philadelphia and are held in the collections of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania.'
