COLLECTION OF THREE 17TH CENTURY ABRAHAM VAN DIEPENBEKE HANDCOLORED DRESSAGE ENGRAVINGS . Published Antwerp, William Cavenish, the first Duke of Newcastle, 1658 & 1700. Two matted, of the period plates from La Methode Nouvelle et Invention extraordinaire de Dresser les Chevaux, published by William Cavenish. Titles include Passades au Petit Galop and Le Capitaine Mazin elant a Cheval, and Die halbe volta linets. These two larger plates, #22 & 18 have a sheet size of 18 3/8' high x 21 7/8" wide.

The smaller matted plate is from the volume Nouvelle Methode pour Dresser les Chevaux, the first German edition of William Cavendish's A General System of Horsemanship in all its Branches, published by Johann Michael Sporlin for Zieger & Lehmann, Nuremberg in 1700. Measuring 13 1/8" high x 15 3/4" wide.

William Cavenish (1592-1676) left England in 1644 and established a riding academy in Antwerp in 1648. Most of the Newcastle plates were drawn by Flemish artist Abraham van Diepenbeke, who studied with Peter Paul Rubens at Anvers. The plates depict the Duke himself, along with other noblemen at various estates riding dressage horses. Newcastle plates are among the most admired early engravings depicting horsemanship.

Full margins, good impression and color, minor toning. Seams to the center of all plates associated with being bound. The smaller print has a round restoration to the center.
