AMERICAN NEEDLEWORK SAMPLER WORKED BY CATHERINE BROWN, Dated April 24, 1823. Needlework verse flanked above by upper and lower case alphabets in various styles and below by scene depicting various buildings, windmill, and tree birds and squirrels nibbling on nuts surrounded by Greek outer border. Verse entitled: 'Love to god produces love to man'.
'Let gratitude in acts of goodness flow.
Our love to god in love to man below.
Be this our joy to calm the troubled breast,
Support the weak, and succour the weakest,
Direct the wand'rer, dry the widows tear,
The orphan guard, the sinking spirits cheer,
Tho' small our pow'r, tho' mean our skill.
God see's the heart, judges by the will.'
