LATE 19TH CENTURY AMERICAN PAINTED SECRETARY IN TWO PARTS,Late 19th Century. In two parts. The upper case having moulded top, stenciled and handpainted with date 1876, Live to Learn and Learn to Live to the sides, and A good book is the best entertainment to front. Over two glazed door panels with a dark green glass knob pull, opening to three painted shelves. Doors are nicely stenciled and handpainted in decorative motif. Lock and key to the upper cabinet is present. Lower projecting chest of drawers, is also stenciled and handpainted and has one long drawer, over two short drawers, with green glass pull knobs, over two long drawers. Stenciling to the sides of the lower case. Raised on plinth base. The back with wide horizontal boards and stenciled JV. Old locks to all of the drawers, but no key is present which functions. - Approx. 96" tall overall. The lower case is 38" high x 43 1/2" wide x 22" deep. The top case is 17" deep. Normal wear associated with age and use throughout. The paint is quite good and presents nicely. All of the drawers have locks, but no key is present to this lower cabinet. Key is present only for the top case. Old stains to the interior of the drawers, some shrinkage of the drawer bottoms, old split to the top of the lower case, as well as some old scratches and gouges.
