CHINESE TANG DYNASTY AMBER-STRAW GLAZED POTTERY FIGURE OF RECUMBENT (SLEEPING) DOG.- L: 3 ΒΌ". PROVENANCE: Estate of Roberta Wright McCain, Washington, DC Estimate $200-300
NOTE: According to Joe McCain, Roberta McCain's son, this piece is one of the oldest porcelain pieces from her collection and was acquired by accident; "she wandered down into the basement of an antique store in Venice and discovered a small straw-glazed figure of a reclining dog. Bought on impulse for a few lira, she later learned it was crafted in the Tang Dynasty (5th-8th century) in China and was worth several hundred dollars. Feeling bad about the inadvertent 'rip-off' she later sent the shop-owner a check for $100."
