JOSEPH CUMMINGS CHASE (American, 1878-1965). WORLD WAR I DOUGH BOY, Signed lower left, dated 1918, and later inscribed to "To. S.V. Silverthorne/wkith appreciation." Pencil drawing on paper, titled "Coffee! O Boy!"

Noted on reverse in pencil, in different hand, "Please be very careful and do not lose this - it is the original sketch of the "Dough Boy"used in posters during World War I."

PROVENANCE: Dr. Alfred Maurice (1921-2019). Following his service in the U.S. Army during WWII where he was an illustrator/draughstman, Dr. Maurice became a well-known art professor at University of Chicago, Illinois, art collector, and influential director of the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts during the 1960s.
