ATTRIBUTED TO KARL ERNST METZLER (German / American, 1909-1995). Portrait of Morris Lewis (Morris Louis?), Mixed media on board. Attribution of the artist is based on a photo (size: 10 x 5.75 inches) of the referenced artist while painting this artwork. Verso pencil notation (of the photo): "Karl Metzler, working on a tempera portrait of Morris Lewis, artist friend, Exhibited at Worlds Fair, Has had one man shows at, also does lithographs , stone, wood." The artist in question could be Morris Louis (1912-1962), an American painter who during the 1950s became one of the earliest exponents of Color Field painting and who was instrumental in forming the art movement that is known today as the Washington Color School. Unframed. - 38 x 30.5 inches
