PAPUA NEW GUINEA KAMINABIT VILLAGE SPIRIT MASK. Hand carved Papua New Guinea spirit mask from Kaminabit Village. These masks are significant in the culture of the Sepik tribes of Papua New Guinea and are often used during ceremonies such as scarification or initiation of young boys. When not in use, they may be consulted for advice during times of famine or sickness. The masks are designed to represent spirits and are believed to help people face challenges and ward off unfriendly spirits. They often feature clan totems, symbols, deities, animals, and ancestral spirits, with colors derived from natural pigments like limes and ochres. - Height: 28 1/2".
