BURKINA FASO MOSSI "WAN-BALINGA" MASK. Mossi mask from Burkina Faso. These masks are traditionally used by the Mossi people, specifically the farmers, during funeral ceremonies for elders and to honor ancestors. They are also used to protect crops. The mask, known as "wan-balinga," represents a mythical figure considered the mother of the first Mossi ruler. It is made of wood, painted with natural pigments, and adorned with fibers. The mask features a distinctive geometric patterns in red, black, and white, and a fringe of raffia around the base. - Height approximately: 20 inches.
