LIBERIAN DAN PEOPLE PORO MASK. Patinated Poro mask from the Dan people of Liberia. These masks are significant in the Dan culture, primarily used in initiation ceremonies by members of the male Poro society. The mask is made of wood and it features a reddish-brown face with a roughly textured surface. It has one round, white eye and another hollowed-out eye (missing metal eye lid), a partially open mouth, and two horns extending from the top. The red color is associated with the blood of circumcision and signifies that the mask is "hot" or "dangerous" to non-initiates. - Height: 17 inches. Estimate $140-160
