FOLLOWER OF HUBERT ROBERT (French, 18th century). Two works: Landscapes with Classical Ruins and Hollyhocks in a Trompe l'Oeil Frame, Pair of vertical framed oil on canvas paintings depicting romantic landscape scenes in the Neoclassical or Romantic styles. The compositions feature dramatic lighting with a prominent glow on the horizon contrasting with darker, moodier skies and foregrounds. The left painting shows a classical temple ruin alongside a stream and trees. The right painting presents a more rugged, dramatic landscape featuring a steep, dark cliff face, a cascade or stream flowing into a dark pool, and a smaller ruin perched atop the high ground.
