EDGAR CHAHINE (Armenian / French, 1874-1947). Old Arab Woman, Alternative title: "Fellah Woman." Ink signed lower left hand corner. Etching in dark, rich tones. The composition captures an old woman wrapped in a hooded garment (burnous or haik) against a stark, shadowy background with hints of North African/Middle Eastern architecture (domes) in the distance. It belongs to the genre of Orientalism, which was highly popular in 19th-century European art. Artists frequently depicted scenes from North Africa (Morocco, Algeria, Egypt) and the Middle East.
