AFTER JOHN SIMPSON (British, 1782 - 1847). The Negro (probably Ira Frederick Aldridge), Engraving after the artwork dated 1827 by John Simpson entitled: "Head of a Man" who portraits probably Ira Frederick Aldridge (1807-1867) ; Aldridge was at the time a known American tragedian and Shakespearean actor and who performed extensively in England and Europe, having faced racial discrimination in the United States. The engraving was created in Britain during the peak of the abolitionist movement and to help galvanize public opinion against the institution of slavery. Unframed.
