ARTIST PROFILE: Bennard B. Perlman (1928–2016) was a distinguished Baltimore-based painter, educator, and art historian whose prolific career began with a museum exhibition at the age of 13. A graduate of the Carnegie Institute of Technology—where he was a classmate of Andy Warhol—Perlman became a central figure in the Maryland art community, serving as the long-time chair of the art department at the Community College of Baltimore and lecturing at prestigious institutions like Oxford University. As a painter, he was known for his modernist landscapes and "stained-glass Cubism," featuring his work in over 70 solo exhibitions and permanent collections such as the Library of Congress. Beyond the canvas, Perlman was a tireless advocate for public art funding and a renowned author of eight books, including the definitive history of the Ashcan School, The Immortal Eight.
