ARTIST PROFILE: Clarence Scott White (1872–1965) was an American Impressionist painter and pastelist primarily active in Massachusetts. Often overshadowed in historical records by his contemporary, the famous pictorialist photographer Clarence Hudson White, Scott White established his own reputation as a master of traditional New England landscapes and coastal views. Born in Boston, he became a frequent exhibitor at prestigious institutions, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Boston Art Club, and the Art Institute of Chicago. His work is characterized by a refined use of color and light, particularly in his atmospheric pastels and gouaches of rural mountain farmsteads, autumn roads, and coastal harbors. He was also a noted traveler, visiting Bermuda multiple times between 1894 and 1937, where he produced a significant body of work depicting the island's architecture and lush scenery that is now preserved in the Bermuda National Gallery.
