ARTIST PROFILE: Victor DeGrailly (1804–1887) was a prominent French landscape painter who, despite likely never visiting the United States, earned recognition as a member of the Hudson River School. Born in Paris and trained by Jean-Victor Bertin, DeGrailly was a frequent exhibitor at the Paris Salon for five decades, starting in 1830. His artistic style was heavily influenced by 17th-century Dutch masters like Jacob van Ruisdael and Meindert Hobbema, whose works he often emulated or copied directly. Interestingly, his celebrated depictions of American scenery were actually based on engravings of drawings by William Henry Bartlett rather than firsthand observation. Following his death in Paris in 1887, his legacy was later highlighted in 1975 during a monographic exhibition at the Washburn Gallery in New York City.
