CONGOLESE Yaka Power Figure, Biteki This Yaka power figure (known as a biteki) from the Democratic Republic of the Congo is a striking example of ritual sculpture, characterized by a carved wooden head integrated into a soft, anthropomorphic body composed of stuffed fabric and organic materials. The head displays classic Yaka stylistic traits, including a high, rounded cranium, coffee-bean eyes set within deep sockets, and a refined, linear nose, all weathered with a rich, encrusted patina that suggests significant age and ritual use. Its torso is heavily layered with white kaolin clay and accented by a red pigment cross, while the limbs are wrapped in dark, resin-impregnated cloth, creating a powerful contrast in texture and color. Adorned with several strands of beaded necklaces and fine wire bracelets, the figure’s posture—with bent arms and slightly flexed legs—conveys a sense of latent energy and spiritual presence, reflecting its traditional role as a protective charm or a vessel for ancestral mediation.
