ARTIST PROFILE: Margaret Fernie Eaton (1871–1963) was a versatile English-born artist who became a prominent figure in the American art scene after studying under masters like Kenyon Cox at the Art Students League of New York. While she earned early acclaim for the "human power" and technical skill of her watercolor genre studies, she is most distinguished as a pioneer in pyrography, reportedly becoming the first artist to utilize wood-burning techniques for magazine illustrations and book covers. Alongside her husband and frequent collaborator, Hugh McDougal Eaton, she operated Valhall Studio in Brooklyn, where the couple produced an extensive body of work ranging from architectural panels and book-plates to etchings and illuminations. A respected member of the New York Watercolor Club and the Art Students League, Eaton’s career was defined by a sophisticated blend of fine art and decorative illustration that bridged the gap between traditional painting and modern commercial design.
