ETATS-UNIS DE L'AMERIQUE SEPTENTRIONALE; DELAMARCHE/DE VAUGONDY, HAND-COLORED ENGRAVED MAP1785 Historically important engraved map, hand-colored in outline, depicts the newly independent United States of America shortly after the Revolution, titled "Etats-Unis de l'Amerique Septentrionale, Avec les Isles Royale, de Terre Neuve, de St. Jean, l'Acadie &c.", dated 1785 and issued in Paris by Charles Francois Delamarche as a supplement to Robert de Vaugondy's "Atlas Universel". The map is notable as one of the earliest to depict Thomas Jefferson's ten proposed western states including Silvania, Michigania, Chersonesus, Assenisipia, Metropotamia, Illinoia, Saratoga, Washington, Polypotamia, and Pelisipia with national boundaries delineated in outline color: the United States in green, British holdings in red or pink, and Spanish territories in yellow, the latter encompassing Louisiana, Florida, and New Orleans west of the Mississippi. Rich in period detail, the map extends from Hudson Bay and Newfoundland in the north to the Gulf of Mexico and the Rio Grande in the south, with copious annotations on Native American nations (Sioux, Padoucas, Iroquois, Cherokee), early explorers such as De Soto and La Salle, forts, and settlements, and features an elaborate figural title cartouche with palm trees, a ship, and dockside barrels in the upper left, alongside a reference table of the original Thirteen States and their capitals in the lower right. Not examined out of frame. 20 x 26 inches; frame: 29 x 35 inches $700-1,000
