ARTIST PROFILE: Born in Raleigh, North Carolina, on August 18, 1945, Herb Jackson is a distinguished American abstract artist and educator who dedicated over four decades to his craft and teaching. After earning his MFA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1970, Jackson began a long-standing career at Davidson College, where he served as the Douglas Houchens Professor of Fine Arts until his retirement in 2011. Throughout his career, he achieved international acclaim with over 100 solo exhibitions worldwide, and his non-representational paintings and oil crayon drawings are featured in prestigious institutions such as the British Museum and the Brooklyn Museum. His significant contributions to the arts have been recognized with the North Carolina Award in 1999 and the North Caroliniana Society Award in 2015, cementing his legacy as a vital figure in North Carolina’s cultural heritage.
