CARTE DU GOUVERNEMENT MILITAIRE DE L'EMPIRE: ENGRAVED MAP OF THE HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE'S CIRCLES (CERCLES), CHATELAIN'S ATLAS HISTORIQUE, AMSTERDAM 1721 Hand-colored 18th-century engraved sheet titled "Carte du Gouvernement Militaire de l'Empire, ou on fait connoitre la puissance de cet illustre corps..." illustrating the ten administrative and military "Cercles" (Circles) of the Holy Roman Empire under the constitution of Emperor Charles V (Charlequint). This detailed plate is part of Henri Abraham Chatelain's Atlas Historique, published in Amsterdam; a wonderful example of Chatelain's elegant, meticulously researched historical maps. The large central hand-colored map of the German Empire, divided by its Circles, is surrounded by ten smaller regional inset maps (Austria, Swabia, Bavaria, Upper Rhine, Westphalia, Bas-Rhin, Franconia, Burgundy, and others), an allegorical figure, and an imperial eagle coat-of-arms, together with extensive French-language explanatory text and detailed statistical tables ("Matricule de l'Empire") listing the states, cities, bishoprics, and their financial/military contributions to the Empire.
