CONGOLESE SONGYE POWER NKISHI FIGURE Democratic Republic of the Congo, This Songye power figure, or nkishi, from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, is a commanding ritual object designed to channel spiritual energy for the protection of a family or community. Carved from a dense, dark-toned wood with a smooth, aged patina, the figure is characterized by its stiff, vertical posture and a distended abdomen that signifies vitality and the presence of a central cavity for sacred medicinal "charges". The head is particularly expressive, featuring a long, wedge-shaped beard and a broad, flattened facial plane with heavy-lidded eyes, while the torso is wrapped in a thick bundle of natural raffia and woven fiber at the waist. This fiber attachment often served to secure additional symbolic items or to designate the figure's specific ritual purpose. Traditionally activated by a nganga (ritual specialist), such figures were believed to possess a conscious spirit capable of warding off malevolent forces, curing persistent illnesses, or ensuring success in social and agricultural endeavors. Height: 21.5 inches
