ARTIST PROFILE: Clasina Carolina Frederica (Clasine) Neuman (1851–1908) was a prominent Dutch painter and draftsman whose artistic foundation was established under the tutelage of her father, the painter Johan Heinrich Neuman, and further refined at the National School for Drawing Teachers in Amsterdam. Specializing in still lifes, genre scenes, and portraits—including a notable depiction of her father—she was an active member of professional circles such as Arti et Amicitiae and the Art Love Society. Despite her talent, which earned her a second-place award at a 1901 Paris exhibition and inclusion in the National Exhibition of Women's Work 1898, she was famously rejected three times by the Pulchri Studio, prompting her father to suggest the board feared competition from women. Following her move to The Hague in 1891, she continued to work until her death at age 57, leaving behind a legacy that is preserved today in the collections of the Kunstmuseum Den Haag and the Frans Hals Museum.
