GABONESE AMBETE RELIQUARY STATUES This pair of Ambete statues from Gabon represents a unique and powerful tradition of reliquary sculpture within Central African art. Carved from light-toned wood with a weathered, encrusted patina, these figures are distinguished by their boxy, elongated torsos, which were traditionally designed with hollow cavities in the back to house the skeletal remains of honored ancestors. The figures feature oversized, rounded heads with serene, downcast eyes and mouths slightly open, while their bodies are adorned with fiber neck-rings, woven loincloths, and integrated cords that emphasize their role as active, ritualized guardians. One figure is particularly striking for the blue diamond motif painted on its chest, likely signifying a specific lineage or spiritual protection. These statues served as focal points for community veneration, acting as physical bridges between the living and the spiritual power of the deceased to ensure the continued well-being and guidance of the family or village. Height (approx.): 23 inches
