This portrait depicts Toussaint Louverture (c. 1743–1803), the formidable leader of the Haitian Revolution and a towering figure of the 18th century. A former slave who ascended to the rank of general and revolutionary philosopher, Louverture orchestrated the successful uprising in Saint-Domingue that eventually abolished slavery and secured Haiti’s independence from French colonial rule. Often hailed as the "Black Spartacus," he earned a reputation as a brilliant warrior-statesman whose intellect and leadership drew comparisons to the great revolutionary heroes of the modern era.
