Ira Aldridge as Othello, 19th century
19th century monochrome lithograph of the celebrated African-American Shakespearean actor Ira Aldridge (1807–1867) in his most famous role as Othello. Shown from the chest up in a three-quarter view, Aldridge is depicted with a powerful and intense expression and is costumed in a regally draped, toga-like garment over an embroidered tunic, accessorized with a large hoop earring and a distinctive flat-topped hat adorned with a row of star-like motifs. Below the central image, the subject is identified by a delicate cursive inscription reading "Ira Aldridge as Othello". Unmounted. Unframed.
