ARTIST PROFILE: Born in Paris in 1859 to a family of French and English descent, Vincent Nicolas Francis Joseph Weiss—better known as José Weiss—was a largely self-taught artist who initially pursued a career in the wine trade due to his father’s discouragement of painting as a profession. His business travels to England eventually led him to Amberley, Sussex, where the successful sale of a local landscape painting at London's Goupil Gallery around 1890 inspired him to commit fully to his art. By 1893, Weiss had settled in Amberley, exhibiting frequently with the Society of British Artists and establishing deep roots in the region. Following his marriage to Agnes Mary Ratton in 1894, he moved to Houghton House, where he remained for the rest of his life, officially becoming a naturalized British citizen in 1899.
