ARTIST PROFILE: Jacques Villon (1875–1963), born Gaston Duchamp, was a distinguished French artist and a pivotal figure in the Duchamp family of creators. Mentored by his grandfather, Emile Frederic Nicolle, Villon mastered engraving at a young age, producing his first significant etchings—portraits of his father and grandfather—by age 16. His long career was marked by academic study at L’Ecole des Beaux-Arts and early success as an illustrator, eventually evolving into a celebrated painter and engraver whose work was inspired by masters like Rembrandt. Represented exclusively by Galerie Louis Carré from the 1940s onward, he earned international prestige, including first prize at the Carnegie Institute in 1950. His legacy is cemented by a vast exhibition history at major institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art and the Grand Palais, highlighting his role as a master of both Cubism and printmaking.
