ARTIST PROFILE: Jerry Clapsaddle (1941–2023) was an American painter and educator celebrated for his intricate contributions to Pattern Painting and abstraction. Born in Nebraska and raised on a farm in Iowa, Clapsaddle’s work was deeply influenced by the rhythmic, seasonal cycles of the Midwestern landscape, which he translated into complex "color-tweeds" and grids composed of thousands of overlapping brushstrokes. He earned his MFA from Indiana University in 1966 and enjoyed a distinguished 40-year teaching career, most notably serving as an Associate Professor of Art at George Mason University from 1982 to 2005. His artistic legacy includes "Shoreline" (1997) in Toronto—the largest public artwork in Canada—as well as exhibitions at major institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
