NEPALESE REPOUSEE HINDU AND BUDDHIST ICONOGRAPHY PANELS malleable metal—likely copper or a similar alloy This collection of three Nepalese repousse panels showcases the intricate metalworking traditions of the Kathmandu Valley, typically used to adorn temples and private shrines. Each panel is crafted using the repousse technique, where the malleable metal—likely copper or a similar alloy—is hammered from the reverse side to create high-relief imagery that is then finished with fine engraving on the front. The central panel depicts a prominent Buddha or deity seated on a lotus throne in a traditional mudra, surrounded by a celestial retinue and lush, foliate scrollwork. The flanking panels feature complex mandala configurations and astrological charts, including wheel-like structures filled with symbolic animals and sacred scripts that serve as cosmological diagrams. The darkened patina against the raised, polished highlights emphasizes the depth of the spiritual narrative, reflecting a masterful blend of Hindu and Buddhist iconography characteristic of Newar craftsmanship.
$150-250

Note: Consignor acquired panels while visiting Nepal in 1972.
