NIGERIAN MAMA TRIBAL ZOOMORPHIC MANGAM MASK Nigeria Patinated hand-carved Mama tribe mask from Nigeria is a compelling example of the zoomorphic abstraction found in Western African ritual art. Carved from a single block of dense, dark wood with a weathered patina, the mask—typically referred to as a mangam—features a simplified, elongated human head that transitions into a large, horizontal circular crest representing the horns of a forest buffalo. The face is minimalist, with small, slit-like eyes and a protruding mouth, while the sweeping, ring-like horns dominate the silhouette to symbolize the physical power and fertility of the animal. Traditionally, these masks were worn atop the head as part of a larger fiber costume during agricultural festivals and funeral rites, where the dancers' movements were intended to channel the spirit of the buffalo to ensure a successful harvest and maintain the spiritual equilibrium of the community. Presented with a stand. Length: 25 inches
