TEN ZUNI INTRICATELY CARVED MEDICINE FETISHES For over a millennium, the A:Shiwi (Zuni) have carved animal fetishes to honor the "medicine" or natural traits of wildlife, serving as focal points for personal growth and spiritual connection. These objects are treated with deep respect, as the true value lies in the indwelling spirit rather than the physical carving itself. While strict protocols govern ceremonial items, non-ceremonial fetishes are widely used for reflection.
Artists craft these fetishes from diverse natural materials, including stones like turquoise and jet, or organic elements such as mother-of-pearl, antler, and bone. Many figures are adorned with "bundles" of coral or shell tied to the back as offerings to the spirit within. Length of Black Turtle 2 inches $100-150
NOTE: Several carvings within this set feature the artists' signatures or initials, including specific pieces signed by the artists Russell Shack, Danette Laate, and Marilyn Quam (often Marilyn Chuyate Quam).
