VEDUTA DEL TEMPIO DELLA SIBILLA IN TIVOLI, GIOVANNI BATTISTA PIRANESI, ETCHING, 18TH CENTURY This etching depicts the circular Roman Temple of Vesta, popularly known as the Temple of the Sibyl, perched above the gorge at Tivoli, its ring of fluted Corinthian columns and richly carved entablature rendered with Piranesi's characteristic command of light, shadow, and architectural detail. Adjoining the ancient temple is a rectangular medieval structure with a bell tower, illustrating the layered history of the site, while the foreground teems with diminutive figures, tumbling foliage, and rustic staffage typical of Piranesi's picturesque approach to classical ruins.
