THREE CHINESE SHANG DYNASTY PENDANTS. Lot comprises of three patinated and incised (1) A beige and blackish color jade figure of an elephant. Shang dynasty. Length: 8 cm, 3 1/16 inches. (2) A light green jade silkworm. Shang dynasty. Length: 5 cm, 2 inches. And (3) A light green calcified hetian jade kneeling figurine with two "can openers". Shang dynasty. Height: 4 cm, 1.6 inches. Reference: Fu Hao tomb 1200 BC. Note: The Shang dynasty, also known as the Yin dynasty, was a Chinese royal dynasty that ruled in the Yellow River valley during the second millennium BC, traditionally succeeding the Xia dynasty and followed by the Western Zhou dynasty. Modern scholarship dates the dynasty between the 16th and 11th centuries BC, with more agreement surrounding the end date than beginning date. NOTE: A copy of the consignor's purchase receipt will be provided upon request. Estimate $400-600 PROVENANCE: Acquired in the early 1990s from Frank H. Crane's "The Hundred Antiques" store (Stirling, Ontario, Canada). Mr. Crane was a frequent visitor to Hong Kong where he acquired Archaic jades mainly from Mr. Lai Loy's well known and prominent shop near the Man Mo Temple on Hollywood Road. Mr. Lai (Chinese, 1926-2012) was the descendent of antique dealers from Guangzhou, China. In 2005, stones from the collection were verbally authenticated by Dr. Sarah Milledge Nelson (American, 1931 - 2020), a noted archaeologist and Distinguished Professor Emerita from the Department of Anthropology, University of Denver.
