TWO CHINESE SHANG DYNASTY PENDANTS. Lot comprises of patinated and incised (1) celadon jade standing figure with a head dress. Shang dynasty Height: 8.5 cm, 3 2/16 inches. Reference: similar jades from the Fu Hao tomb 1200 BC; and (2) greenish yellow jade ornament in the shape of a human head with a crown. Shang dynasty. Height: 7.2 cm, 2 9/16 inches. Reference: "Chinese Jade Selected articles from Orientations 1983-1996" "Shang dynasty Zoomorphic Jades" by Yang Jianfang p. 17, fig. 15. Note: The Shang dynasty, also known as the Yin dynasty, was a Chinese royal dynasty that ruled in the Yellow River valley during the second millennium BC, traditionally succeeding the Xia dynasty and followed by the Western Zhou dynasty. Modern scholarship dates the dynasty between the 16th and 11th centuries BC, with more agreement surrounding the end date than beginning date.

PROVENANCE: Acquired in the early 1990s from Frank H. Crane's "The Hundred Antiques" store (Stirling, Ontario, Canada). Mr. Crane was a frequent visitor to Hong Kong where he acquired Archaic jades mainly from Mr. Lai Loy's well known and prominent shop near the Man Mo Temple on Hollywood Road. Mr. Lai (Chinese, 1926-2012) was the descendent of antique dealers from Guangzhou, China. In 2005, stones from the collection were verbally authenticated by Dr. Sarah Milledge Nelson (American, 1931 - 2020), a noted archaeologist and Distinguished Professor Emerita from the Department of Anthropology, University of Denver.
