Poster: First Congress of Black Writers and Artists, Paris, 1956, Limited edition poster number 118 of an edition of 125 and printed by Mourlot Master Printer Henri Deschamps. Plate signed and pencil numbered. The central image by Pablo Picasso depicts a man in profile wearing a crown of thorns or leaves, symbolizing suffering, dignity, and perhaps rebirth. Poster printed for the "1er Congrès des Écrivains et Artistes Noirs" (1st Congress of Black Writers and Artists) which took place 19-22 September 1956 at La Sorbonne(Amphithéâtre Descartes), Paris. This congress was a foundational event in the post-colonial intellectual movement, bringing together writers, artists, and thinkers from Africa and the African diaspora to discuss culture, politics, and the future of African nations. It was organized by the intellectual and literary journal Présence Africaine. Unframed. Not mounted or laid down.
