CONSTANTIN TERECHKOVITCH (Russian / French, 1902 - 1978). The Moor for the Petrushka Ballet, 1953, Lithograph with colors of a costume design. Pencil signed and dated lower right hand corner. The print is defined by its bold colors and theatrical energy; figure is a dark-skinned, standing male character with an elaborate, almost puppet-like appearance. He is dressed in an ornate, puffed, and ruff-adorned costume dominated by red, white, and blue/purple tones, suggesting a military or courtly uniform. Unframed. Not mounted or laid down.

ARTIST PROFILE: Constantin (or Kostia) Terechkovitch attended Moscow's Academy of Fine Arts in Moscow before (at the age of eighteen) leaving his homeland and venturing to Paris. There, Terechkovitch met Michel Larionoff and became involved in the Ballets Russes which had swept the Parisian social world. He was also introduced to other major French artists , such as Chaim Soutine, Amadeo Modigliani and Marc Chagall. Starting in 1926, Terechkovitch exhibited his work at the Girard, Quatre-Chemins, Elysse, Petrides and Bernier galleries. He also participated in the Paris Salons and in many group shows in Paris. In 1951 he was elected a Knight of the Legion of Honor. Abroad, Terechkovitch exhibited in Brussels, Geneva and New York. - Sheet: 16 x 20 inches
